Due to the cylindrical nature of the building, we suggested that a laser scanner would be the most appropriate tool to undertake the survey. We hired a Scanstation C10 from Leica Geosystems and spent two days scanning the building internally and externally. The data recorded produced a ‘point cloud’ with photographic (RGB) values to create a model of the building. Using AutoCAD and third party software, we were able to produce highly accurate survey drawings including; a topographical survey, measured building survey, elevations and cross sections.

The South Rotunda Glasgow

Glasgow Harbour Tunnel was built in 1890 – 1896 to allow pedestrian and vehicular access to both sides of the River Clyde. At each end of the tunnel, stands a circular brick terminal with a domed roof which housed hydraulic lifts for easy access to the tunnel. Three tunnels were built, one for pedestrians which was closed in 1980 and the other two for vehicles, which were filled in 1986. The North Rotunda is currently being used as a casino and restaurant, whereas the South Rotunda has been neglected over the years.

Sigma Surveys was awarded the contract to survey the South Rotunda by Elder & Canon architects who are responsible for providing Glasgow Building Preservation Trust with new designs for the future use of the building.
