Sigma Surveys has invested in the latest cutting edge survey technology to ensure that every survey produced for our clients is to the highest possible standard of accuracy. We constantly adhere to the RICS specification for ‘Measured surveys of land, buildings and utilities’ 3rd edition. Our surveyors use Trimble S6 robotic total stations on site before downloading the data into a CAD based survey software application. The Trimble S6 Total Station redefines instrument performance with unsurpassed integration of servos and angular sensors. The instrument’s advanced error compensation provides fast, accurate measurements every time. With the TSC3 data logger, the surveyor has full control over the S6 at all times and provides seamless integration with the R10 GPS receiver at the touch of a button.
Depending on the type and size of the building, we will generally laser scan the exterior and corridors to generate a 3D pointcloud where accurate footprints and floor plans can be produce. The 3D pointcloud can also be used for reflective ceiling plans, internal / external elevations and cross sections. The remainder of the building will generally be measured using a Leica Bluetooth Disto connected to a tablet PC with MBS Survey Software installed. This software effectively allows us to draw floorplans in a CAD based application whilst on site.
Sigma Surveys operate a Faro Focus S120 and X330 3D laser scanner offering the most efficient method for 3D measurement and capture. The Faro Focus laser scanner is a pulse based laser scanner omitting up to 976,000 points per second over a 120m -330m range. In only a few minutes, the laser scanner produces dense pointclouds containing millions of points that provide incredibly detailed 3D colour or B&W images of large scale geometries.
Multiple scans from different locations can then be automatically placed to create a cohesive point cloud, resembling an exact measureable copy of even the most complex structures. The data is registered (combined) using Faro Scene software before being exported into software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp and Revit (BIM) to model or produce 2D wireframe drawings.

At Sigma Surveys, we are able to provide our clients with various water based surveys. These include inshore hydrographic surveys, bathymetric surveys and river cross sections.
Our surveyors are RYA and ICC trained for using boats to carry out hydrographic and bathymetric surveys. We attach a Trimble R10 GPS antenna to the boat and pair it via Bluetooth to a Trimble SonarMite echo sounder. The Trimble system enables us to accurately scan the river bed in 3 dimensions before exporting to our AutoCAD based survey software. We can then create a 3D mesh to OS datum or Chart datum, if required.
For river cross sections, we combine our Trimble S6 total station and R10 GPS to accurately survey cross sections at various locations throughout a water course.
We fully survey the building using a 3D laser scanner or Leica DISTO and tablet PC integrated with MBS software. In our opinion, this is the most accurate way to survey buildings and has a proven track record with measured building surveying for architectural purposes.
Once the site work is complete, we effectively have a finished AutoCAD drawing that can be used to calculate NIA / GIA / GEA or lease plans. Sigma Surveys constantly adhere to the RICS Code of Measuring Practice 6th Edition, so our clients can be sure that every square metre has been accounted for.
Our final survey package includes AutoCAD drawings, PDF’s, A3 paper plots, photographs, a survey report and area schedule highlighting all included and excluded areas.
At Sigma Surveys, we are able to monitor anything that is moving or not, as the case may be. Whether it’s a building facade, an area of land or large suspension bridge, we use our high accuracy Trimble S8 total station to monitor movement in 3 dimensions.
Trimble 4D control software adds a fourth dimension to the process by giving the surveyor full control over the S8 from a remote location anywhere in the world. We can access real time monitoring from a remote location and set parameters and tolerances which will alert us to movement, if any.
As a result, 24 hour monitoring can be carried out without a surveyor being present. Results can be displayed as coordinates or graphs in any format that the client may request.
